We are so lucky to have a lovely stage director and experienced theater expert amongst us in our Mecca community. One form of communicating key messages to our greater community is through the arts. That is exactly what we are trying to do with this lovely workshop. In this workshop you will PREPARE to perform a play in front of the greater community with a meaningful message. You don’t need experience but the goal is create a sense of community, help elevate our creativity, and try explore a new talent.
Not everyone was made for theater, but you’ll never know if you dont try.
IRENE KAPUSTINA
Irene Kapustina is a stage director and educator. Born and raised in Minsk, Belarus, Irene came to the US to study theater (Loyola University Chicago) and attend Second City. Irene has directed at Goodman Theatre, The Barrow Group, The Drama League, Under St. Marks, The Kraine, Trinity Institute, Hunter College, and other venues. With a deep interest in using art to develop community, Irene obtained an M.A. in Applied Theatre from CUNY’s School of Professional Studies in New York City.
One of Irene’s most celebrated projects is Lost and Guided, a play that she wrote and directed based on interviews with Syrian refugees living in the US. The play was originally produced by Conrad Fischer and The Angle Project in August 2017 and ran for 4 consecutive weeks at UNDER St. Marks Theater in New York City. Critics called it, “a stunning new play” (Huffington Post), “Theatre at its best…” (The Reviews Hub). The play’s production was also profiled in Entertainment Weekly and was featured on ABC News.
Irene is now based in Chicago where she continues to run The Angle Project (TAP), a theatre company dedicated to community building. At TAP, Irene develops, directs, and produces professional theatre and various applied and educational theatre projects.
